How Talent Rocks helped Rostelecom train 2500 students as part of the Digital Education project
Rostelecom’s “digital literacy” online course needed a mobile platform with a convenient schedule, live streaming, online courses and gamification.
Client
Rostelecom is Russia’s largest provider of digital services and solutions, serving tens of millions of customers. Education is one of the priorities of the company’s sustainability strategy. Rostelecom regularly runs events with universities, students and student associations.
The goal of the Digital Education project is to give humanities students up-to-date knowledge of how the modern economy works and help them build the competencies they need to succeed in the future.
The first wave of training under the project took place in 2020, with only universities from the Rostov Region taking part. In September 2021, the second cohort launched simultaneously at 34 universities in the Southern, North Caucasus and Far Eastern Federal Districts, bringing together more than 2500 students.
Rostelecom
In the Digital Education project, Rostelecom employees act as instructors and experts on 11 digital economy topics, such as the Internet of Things, blockchain, cybersecurity and big data. It’s a kind of digital literacy crash course in a convenient format familiar to Gen Z.
A major strength of the project is that learning isn’t tied to a schedule: thanks to the mobile format, students can watch lecture recordings and complete assignments whenever and wherever it suits them.
Challenge
To train the students, Rostelecom needed a digital platform. The key requirements were:
- Mobility. Students find mobile communication more convenient and intuitive.
- Support for live streams and self-paced online learning.
- Secure storage of video content on the platform.
- Gamification with a transparent system of automatic points.
- Branding and publishing the app under Rostelecom’s developer account.
The app also had to meet the company’s security standards.
Solution
The Tsifra RTK mobile app for Android and iOS was built on the Talent Rocks platform. The app was created and designed in the branding of the Digital Education program.
The entire learning process took place right in the app. Students saw the full course schedule and always knew when the next online class would be, where to watch it and where to complete assignments. Push notifications helped them remember lecture start times and assignment deadlines.
Twice a week, Rostelecom experts gave online lectures that could be watched directly in the app, and the recordings were then uploaded to the mobile library. For those who wanted to dive deeper, the app offered topic-based online microlearning courses with additional assignments.
The app was used to collect feedback through questionnaires and surveys, contact technical support and organizers quickly, and let students communicate with each other.
Participants earned points for activity in the app: completing their profile, doing assignments, joining topic discussions and other social actions. The leaderboard and the full history of points were shown in the achievements table in the app.
Rostelecom
Gamification in the app made it easier to communicate with students and kept points as automated and transparent as possible. Participants understood what they earned points for, and how and when.
For example, alongside almost every online lecture we posted a video course for deeper self-study and offered extra points for passing a test on that video course.
Summary
From September to December 2021, more than 2500 students went through the program. Throughout those months, they studied, got to know each other and stayed in touch in the mobile app.
The most popular course in the project was Data Science (Big Data): participants most often added its classes to their favorites and to the calendar on their smartphones. The course on marketing and digital communications basics came in a close second.
Program students opened the app more than 200,000 times in total, sent each other about 3000 messages in the general chat and about 4000 more private messages.
